Where is there no mobile coverage?
Short answer: generally in all higher and more remote regions. The further from a road, village or cable car – and the more rock between you and the nearest mast – the less reliable the mobile signal. That is exactly where a satellite communicator makes sense.

Glaciated terrain, deep valleys, shaded faces. On high tours often no signal at all.

Long border ridge, networks switching between Austria and Italy, many gaps.

Vast roadless wilderness – away from the few highways and towns, almost no mobile coverage at all.
Northern Canada (NWT & Nunavut)
Tundra and barrens, settlements hundreds of kilometres apart. Coverage only in the towns themselves.
Canadian Rockies & Coast Mountains
Glaciers, deep valleys, boulder terrain. Off the road and ski areas you lose signal fast.
US Rocky Mountains / Wind River Range
Broad high plateaus and wilderness areas, multi-day approaches with no cell at all.

Depending on mast and coastline, mobile coverage usually reaches only about 5 to 30 km out to sea. Behind islands, in fjords and bays the signal often drops out close to shore. On the open sea there is no coverage at all – Iridium is the only network that covers the entire oceans.
Croatian islands & the Kornati
Patchy outside marinas and towns; in the lonely bays and behind the islands, usually no network at all.
Norwegian fjords & Lofoten
Coverage only near settlements. Steep fjord walls block the signal – nothing a few hundred metres off.
Scottish west coast & Hebrides
Large not-spots along the Highland coast and between the islands.
Swedish & Finnish archipelagos

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my tour is in a not-spot?
Rule of thumb: the higher and the further from a road, village or cable car, the less reliable. North and shaded faces, deep valleys, gorges and the back of a ridge are especially affected. For a specific point, the official RTR coverage map (open data from the network operators) helps.
Isn't it enough to hold up my phone in an emergency?
Only if there is any signal within reach. With no network at all, even the 112 emergency call fails. A satellite communicator like the Garmin inReach Mini 2 works independently of mobile networks, via satellite.
Which tours is a rented inReach worth it for?
For single multi-day or high-alpine tours in the regions listed above – Alpine crossings, high tours, long-distance hikes, ski tours. Buying usually only pays off once you are out in network-free terrain several times a year.
Does the inReach work at sea?
